The Hunger Games
The name has been floating around out there in my world for about a year or so. I've heard lots of people talking about it and I've seen lots of tweets about it. I've even watched a few commercials for the new movie. So, why am I so hesitant to read it?
I read the Twilight books. I'm not ashamed to say that I read them and enjoyed them. I liked them for the same reason that so many people hated them; because they were cheesy, mindless, hopelessly romantic and unrealistic! Just because I'm an adult doesn't mean that I want to learn some big lesson or gain some huge insight into the world every time I pick up a book. Sometimes, I just want to escape. Okay, most of the time I just want to escape. I don't want to read a book about someone who lives a boring and mundane life like me. I want to read about someone who meets a vampire and falls in love with him, because that's not real!
So, I have no real argument against reading The Hunger Games. Everyone I know that has read it, loved it. I say that it doesn't interest me, but I don't know...maybe it does. I just recently finished reading Ender's Game, something that I would not normally have read or liked, but despite that, I enjoyed it. Why not pick up The Hunger Games?
Am I afraid of being one of those people who only reads the book because it's popular? What's so bad about that?
Am I afraid of being sucked into another story that is really meant for tweens? Twilight got a little out of hand, don't you think...yeah, I'm talking to you Team-Edward-shirt-sporting-soccer-moms!
What is it that holds me back from reading the books? I don't know!
If you've read the books, and you are a sensible and intelligent adult woman, tell me what you think? Should I read them?
I know what you mean - I was very hesitant to read them also - my daughter kept telling me I'd love them. Finally, my book club selected Hunger Games for their monthly selection - and I still was reluctant to get started. Once I started, I became one of their biggest fans. Couldn't put them down. Read all three within a week. Can't wait for the movie.....

I concur. It's supposedly for young adults, but if I hadn't known, it would have just been a really great read. Now it's an amazing trilogy with an upcoming movie I can't wait to see, and I'm completely unashamed when I recommend it to my friends. You should definitely read it if you haven't already.
